A root canal is necessary when the soft inner tissue, or pulp, of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to a variety of reasons such as deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If left untreated, this can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
If a root canal is suspected, an extensive examination will be conducted, which may include X-rays to determine the extent of the tooth damage and to visualize the shape of the root canals.
Local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and surrounding tissue. A rubber dam is then placed around the tooth to isolate it and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.
The dentist or endodontist drills an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized instruments, the inflamed or infected pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals.
Once the pulp has been removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped using tiny instruments. The cleaning process involves flushing out debris and bacteria with disinfecting solutions.
After the canals are cleaned and dried, they are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, to seal them. An adhesive cement is used to ensure complete sealing of the canals.
With the root canal finished, the opening made in the tooth must be closed. A temporary filling is often placed to seal the opening until the tooth is restored with a permanent filling or crown at a subsequent appointment. The crown or filling provides the tooth with strength and protection, and it restores functionality.
A follow-up visit may be necessary to monitor the tooth’s healing process. In some cases, a course of antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up any lingering infection.
Root canal treatment generally has a high success rate and is a standard procedure to save teeth and alleviate dental pain.
