Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that is badly decayed, infected, or damaged. Instead of removing the tooth, the dentist cleans out the infection from inside the tooth, then seals and restores it so you can keep your natural tooth.

What is
Root Canal Treatment
A root canal is necessary when the soft inner tissue, or pulp, of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to a variety of reasons such as deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If left untreated, this can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Benefits of
Root Canal Treatment
Pain Relief: Removing the infected or inflamed pulp alleviates toothache and discomfort.
Prevention of Spread of Infection: A root canal removes the infection, preventing it from spreading to other teeth or into the jaw and other areas of the face and neck.
Preservation of Natural Tooth: The procedure allows you to keep your natural tooth, avoiding extraction and maintaining your natural smile.
Functional Improvement: A successfully treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care, allowing for normal biting force and sensation.
Aesthetic Benefits: Following a root canal, a crown or filling restores the tooth’s appearance.
If a root canal is suspected, an extensive examination will be conducted, which may include X-rays to determine the extent of the tooth damage and to visualize the shape of the root canals.
Anesthesia and Tooth Isolation
Local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and surrounding tissue. A rubber dam is then placed around the tooth to isolate it and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.
Accessing the Pulp
The dentist or endodontist drills an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized instruments, the inflamed or infected pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals.
Cleaning and Shaping
Once the pulp has been removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped using tiny instruments. The cleaning process involves flushing out debris and bacteria with disinfecting solutions.
Filling the Canals
After the canals are cleaned and dried, they are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, to seal them. An adhesive cement is used to ensure complete sealing of the canals.
Restoring the Tooth
With the root canal finished, the opening made in the tooth must be closed. A temporary filling is often placed to seal the opening until the tooth is restored with a permanent filling or crown at a subsequent appointment. The crown or filling provides the tooth with strength and protection, and it restores functionality.
Follow-Up
A follow-up visit may be necessary to monitor the tooth’s healing process. In some cases, a course of antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up any lingering infection.
Root canal treatment generally has a high success rate and is a standard procedure to save teeth and alleviate dental pain. With modern techniques and anesthesia, a root canal is no more painful than having a filling placed, and it can protect the tooth for the long term, helping to maintain oral health and overall well-being.
