What is

Scaling, Polishing & Gum Treatment?

Scaling
Scaling is the process of removing plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the tooth surfaces, including those below the gumline. It is a crucial procedure for preventing and treating periodontitis or gum disease.

Polishing
Polishing follows scaling and is used to smooth the surfaces of the teeth. This process removes stains and any remaining plaque, making it more difficult for plaque to adhere in the future.

Gum Treatment
Gum treatment involves various procedures aimed at remedying the health of the gum and bone. Treatments may include deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), medication, and, in advanced cases, surgical interventions to manage and restore gum health.

Benefits of

Scaling, Polishing & Gum Treatment

  1. Prevents Gum Disease: Regular scaling and polishing help maintain gum health and prevent conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
  2. Fresher Breath: These treatments help in removing plaque and tartar, which are often sources of bad breath.
  3. Tooth Preservation: By preventing gum disease and decay, scaling and polishing contribute to the longevity of your natural teeth.
  4. Aesthetically Pleasing: Polishing removes stains caused by food, drink, or smoking, giving you a brighter, whiter smile.
    Early Detection of Oral
  5. Health Issues: Regular visits for these treatments allow your dental professional to monitor your oral health and catch potential problems early.

Procedures in

Scaling, Polishing & Gum Treatment

Initial Examination

The process typically begins with an examination of your mouth to assess the overall health of your teeth and gums. This may include X-rays to check for any underlying issues.

Using manual scalers or ultrasonic instruments, the dentist or dental hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and below the gumline. The ultrasonic instrument uses vibrations to break up large pieces of tartar, flushing them out with water.

In cases where gum disease has started to affect the area below the gumline, the roots of the teeth are smoothed to promote healing and reattachment of the gum to the tooth surfaces. This is known as root planing.

After scaling, the teeth are polished using a slow-speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Prophylactic paste, a gritty toothpaste-like solution, is applied to the teeth to make them smooth and shiny.

Depending on the condition of your gums, additional treatments may be recommended. For mild gingivitis, proper cleaning and maintenance might be sufficient. For more severe forms of gum disease, more intensive treatments like deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), antibiotics, or even surgical interventions could be necessary.

The dentist may recommend a follow-up visit to check on the healing of your gums and the effectiveness of the treatment, as well as to schedule your next routine cleaning. They will also provide advice on how to maintain oral hygiene at home, including the proper technique for brushing and flossing.

Scaling, polishing, and gum treatment are not just about keeping your mouth clean; they’re an investment in your overall health. Regular dental appointments for these treatments can profoundly impact your oral health, ensuring your teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come.
